Investigation of convection and diffusion during biodiesel production in packed membrane reactor using 3D simulation

چکیده
The 3D simulation of convection and diffusion phenomena within a ceramic membrane during transesterification reaction was the aim of this study. The ceramic membrane was a tubular micro porous TiO2/Al2O3 packed with the heterogeneous catalyst. The Navier–Stokes, Brinkman and Stephan– Maxwell equations were applied for investigation of fluid flow reaction and mass transfer within the system. The value of the convection was generally between 10 and 10 times higher than diffusion. It depends on concentration component, the diffusion coefficient and components velocity. A good agreement was found with the maximum deviation of 8% from experimental data. 2013 The Korean Society of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry. Published by Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A packed bed membrane reactor for production of biodiesel using activated carbon supported catalyst.
In this study, a novel continuous reactor has been developed to produce high quality methyl esters (biodiesel) from palm oil. A microporous TiO2/Al2O3 membrane was packed with potassium hydroxide catalyst supported on palm shell activated carbon. The central composite design (CCD) of response surface methodology (RSM) was employed to investigate the effects of reaction temperature, catalyst amo...
متن کاملDevelopment of Clay Foam Ceramic as a Support for Fungi Immobilization to Biodiesel Production (RESEARCH NOTE)
Biodiesel is an attractive alternative fuel because of its nontoxicity and biodegradability properties. Biodiesel is produced through transesterification of vegetable oils’ triglyceride. It is obtained from vegetable oils or fats either by chemical or enzyme-catalyzed transesterification with methanol or ethanol. By using whole-cell biocatalyst immobilized within biomass support particles (BSPs...
متن کاملInvestigating the Batch and Continuous Transesterification of Linseed Oil by Using a Alkaline Heterogeneous Catalyst in a Packed Bed Reactor
Both the continuous and batch transesterification of linseed oil were examined in order to maximize the fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) yield. The continuous process was conducted in a packed bed reactor using calcium oxide as a heterogeneous catalyst. In addition, the impact of two variables, namely the molar ratio of methanol to oil and the flow rate (ml/min), on the FAME yield were stu...
متن کاملA CFD Simulation of Hydrogen Production in Microreactors
In this study, the modeling of hydrogen production process in microreactors by methanol-steam reforming reaction is investigated. The catalytic reaction of methanol-steam reforming producing hydrogen is simulated considering a 3D geometry for the microreactor. To calculate diffusion among species, mixture average correlations are compared to Stephan-Maxwell equations. The reactions occurring in...

An optimal continuous production of biodiesel by methanolysis of soybean oil in a packed-bed reactor was developed using immobilized lipase (Novozym 435) as a catalyst in a tert-butanol solvent system. Response surface methodology (RSM) and Box-Behnken design were employed to evaluate the effects of reaction temperature, flow rate, and substrate molar ratio on the molar conversion of biodiesel....
